Bernard Bagalso
May 2021's Alumni of the Month Spotlight
What have you been up to since leaving CCBC? Jobs, accomplishments you'd like to share, moving, etc.
After CCBC (2011-2015, switched into Art 2013-2015), I was able to transfer to MICA and finish Summa Cum Laude with a BFA in illustration. Pre-Covid I worked as a front desk agent in a hotel at the Inner Harbor staying locally.
What art projects are you currently working on and how does it compare to your work at CCBC?
I am currently fully invested in sketchbook work, something that I enjoyed before pursuing art at CCBC. Art school was a great experience that included a latitude of assignments that kept me busy, however, it did not truly allow me to draw in an "autopilot" manner that sketch booking offered devoid of deadlines or anxiety of submitting for a grade.
What’s your current art process like? How does it compare to when you were at CCBC?
Very much similar to how I was back at CCBC, if not more chaotic. I don't mind multiple pieces ending up in disaster if there is a slim chance that something new and refreshing might emerge out of it.
How do you see your work growing in the future?
Hoping to develop a healthy marriage between the unpredictable chaos of my current process and something more sustainable and efficient.
If you had to give advice to your younger self, what would it be?
There is a method to (your) madness. Don't ask me though, as I am still trying to figure it out too. Whatever it might be, just go with the flow and don't trip out too much about it.
