Statement and Biography

"This body of work is an unfolding journal of quiet, isolation, and solitude - with a cat."

Brion McCarthy is a photographer, a father of two amazing daughters, and a denizen of Baltimore city. He likes cats, the Rubik’s Cube, JRR Tolkien, Brian Eno, and making things, in no particular order.

Born in New York City in 1964, Brion first began making photos in his late teens. His first images were published in his local newspaper, The East Hampton Star, in the early 80's.

He left NY in 1987, for Tucson, Arizona, and attended the U of A, where he majored in photography. While there, he volunteered at the Center for Creative Photography, was a member of GPI (Group for Photographic Intentions), showed in local galleries and venues, worked in labs, and assisted many photographers.

Brion's professional career began in Tucson, where he built a studio and worked in-house for Madden Publishing, creating images for their seventeen magazines. In 1999, he accepted an offer to move to Baltimore, MD to build and run a digital studio for Siquis Ltd., a regional advertising agency. After fourteen years of producing images for local, national, and international brands, he purchased the studio and has now run it independently for almost a decade.

Brion serves on the board of the Baltimore chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) and is a member of the Hampden Village Merchants Association (HVMA). He currently resides in Hampden with one of his daughter's cats, Scoop.
